Stop and think about how you feel when you walk into your home or go into a certain room of your home. Do you feel relaxed? Stressed? Organized? Unorganized? The way you feel in your home has a lot to do with what your body is experiencing through all 5 of it’s senses.  Let’s look at how your body’s senses relate around your home, and how you can alter the way you feel!

1. Taste.

Taste around your home? “What am I suppose to do, walk around licking the walls to see what they taste like?” Not exactly. But consider this, how would your mood change if you walked into your kitchen and ate a fresh baked, warm chocolate chip cookie? Or maybe you have a bowl of mints in your office that you can savor to help you focus while you’re working.  These are small and seemingly unimportant details when it comes to how you feel about your home. However, you may just be in a better mood than if you enter the kitchen and the pantry is always empty. Try leaving a few treats or snacks around the rooms of your home and see if it puts you in a little better humor. Careful not to leave too many treats laying around though, or you may end up eating all day long!

2. Hearing.

There are few things more annoying than a cricket chirping in the middle of the night while you’re trying to sleep.  Am I right? Bothersome sounds around your home can affect your concentration and make you extremely irritable. Anytime you hear an annoying sound in your home, investigate it and fix the problem.

You can also boost your concentration and relaxation level in your home by adding music or other soothing sounds in different areas of the house. Try putting some speakers in your kitchen while you cook or clean and listen to your choice of music. You could even consider buying a small water fountain that sits on a table or shelf in your living room and provides a calming noise.

3. Touch.

You’re constantly touching something. Your feet touch the ground when you walk, your butt touches the chair or sofa every time you sit, your hands touch the remote control and light switches. Touch is the one body sense that you can’t escape. Make sure the things you are touching around your home are pleasing to you. What could throw off your balance or mood? Dirty floors, sticky remote, coffee tables with crumbs or food on them, door handles that are greasy, pillows that are lumpy, couches that sink in towards the middle. Most of these annoying “feels” can be easily fixed. Take the 5 minutes to fix them, and you’ll be living in comfort!

4. Sight.

Our visual awareness is arguably the largest factor that affects our every move, thought and feeling. If you stare at something gross for a few seconds, how does that make you feel? Same goes for your home. Walk into the kitchen and see a stack of dirty dishes, you’re likely going to feel dirty or irritable. Sit in your living room or bedroom and see blank walls with holes in them and you’ll be unable to relax.

Make your home a visually appealing place to be in. You don’t have to spend a ton of money on decorations. A few small decorations or photos on the wall can make all the difference in the world. However, the best thing you can do to feel comfortable and relaxed in your own home is to keep it clean and organized. Having a clean, organized home takes one less thing off your mind, and allows you to focus on whatever else it is that you’d like.

5. Smell.

Don’t let foul odors be the culprit of your bad mood in your home. Stinky carpets, dirty dishes, dirty laundry, smelly trash can and other bad smells directly affect how you feel. Again, keeping things clean will eliminate 99% of your odor problems. To help your mood or stimulate your productivity, you can also try burning candles around your home. Pick out different scents for different areas of your home, and see if it makes a difference!
