Being an attentive tenant will score you brownie points with your landlord, and can even benefit you directly as well.  If you notice something that needs fixed or an issue that needs addressed, you should report it to your landlord as soon as possible.  Doing so will save the home owner money, and you headaches.  Here’s a few specific issues to pay close attention to on a regular basis:

  • Mold.  Mold can be dangerous to your health. Catching mold early is important, before it spreads too far.
  • Leaks.  Leaky pipes, foundation leaks and any other water leaks can be costly and ruin your personal items.
  • Window or door drafts.  Talk about a money waster.  Door and window drafts lets your cold or hot air out of your home, costing you money.  Most of the time the problem is as simple as replacing the weather strip, which you or your landlord can do quickly.
  • Clogged drains.  This is a big issue.  Clogged drains can be as minor as plunging them, or as serious as tree roots in your sewer main.  If you unclog a drain and the problem reoccurs frequently, tell your landlord. A backed up sewer is no fun if the problem is left for too long.
